Final-year project · in progressActiveAero

Final-year project · Oct 2026 – 2027

A rear wing that changes its height, pitch and roll on the move. Production active aero usually moves on one axis, or flips between a few set positions. Mine controls all three axes smoothly and can hold any position in between: more downforce in corners, less drag on the straights, and a full airbrake when stopping.

  • Three 3D-printed rack-and-pinion units (one front centre, two rear) driven by DC motors, controlled from a Raspberry Pi Pico W. The prototype uses servos
  • My own Python control app with a 3D model of the wing that follows the real hardware over USB
  • All three actuators working from the app so far. Next: position feedback and closed-loop control

Tools: Pico W, MicroPython, Python, Tkinter, ModernGL, Fusion 360, 3D printing

Formula Student EV

MCR Met Racing · 2 years · aero

Aero on our electric race car. I designed and made the sidepods that house the radiators, and the front nosecone, modelling them in SolidWorks and checking the airflow with CFD. Also trained in the university wind tunnel.

Tools: SolidWorks, CFD, wind tunnel

02

Line-following robot

Year 2 · 2025

Designed the chassis in Fusion 360, then soldered, built and programmed it on a Raspberry Pi Pico within a £30 budget. Three IR sensors feed a PID controller that adjusts each wheel’s speed to keep it on the line, and it finds the line again if it loses it.

Tools: Fusion 360, Pico, MicroPython, PID control

03

Ultrasonic scanner

Embedded Systems · 2025–26

A distance sensor on two servos that sweeps a room and maps what it sees. I wrote a desktop app to show the scan live, switch between manual and automatic sweeps, and log data online to ThingSpeak.

Tools: Pico W, HC-SR04, servos, Python, ThingSpeak

04

DC motor control

Control Engineering · 2026

Modelled a brushed DC motor in MATLAB and Simulink, compared open and closed-loop control, and used Bode and Nyquist plots to choose a gain that stays stable when the load changes.

Tools: MATLAB, Simulink

05

FPGA logic unit

Digital Electronics · 2025–26

Built a 4-bit arithmetic logic unit (add, subtract, AND, OR) from logic gates, tested it on a real FPGA board with switches and 7-segment displays, then wrote a counter in Verilog.

Tools: Quartus Prime, Questa, Verilog, DE10-Lite

People& Planet

Two projects where the brief was about the community and the environment as much as the engineering: keeping food cold without power, and checking that reused water is safe.

HydroCool

2nd-year group project · Pu Ngaol, Cambodia · team of 5

Pu Ngaol has unreliable electricity, so food spoils quickly. We designed a low-cost storage unit that cools itself with almost no power: a hydraulic ram pump uses the river’s own flow to push water through pipes and keep fabric walls damp, and evaporation pulls heat out of the chamber.

  • My part: CAD design, wiring, laser cutting and 3D printing for the prototype
  • A hydraulic ram pump runs on the river’s own flow, so the cooling needs no electricity
  • Prototype tested over five hours against room temperature

Tools: CAD, laser cutting, 3D printing, wiring, temperature testing

Greywater monitor

International team project · 5 months

Reusing greywater only works if you know it is safe. I did the sensors, wiring and code for a Raspberry Pi Pico monitor that reads pH, turbidity and water level, kept lean so it runs on very little power, averages and calibrates the readings, shows them on an OLED, sounds an alarm when they drift, and locks the outlet with a servo. A Python dashboard plots the data live and logs it to CSV.

Pathfinding visualiser

A-Level Computer Science project · C#

Generates its own maps, with terrain from Perlin noise, then finds the shortest route across them. Terrain sets the cost of each step, and I implemented and compared BFS, Dijkstra, bidirectional search and A* on the same maps.

Tools: C#, Perlin noise, graph search

Remote home PC access

In progress · ESP32

My laptop doesn’t have much storage, so I’m setting up remote access to my home PC from uni. An always-on ESP32 wired to the PC’s power switch lets me turn it on over Wi-Fi from anywhere, then I connect over remote desktop to use my files and software.

Tools: ESP32, wiring, networking

AboutMe

I like understanding a system end to end, from the circuit and the code to how it behaves once it is built.

Most of my projects follow the same loop: design the part in CAD, make it, wire it, program it, then test and refine until it works reliably. Before university I worked as an assistant mechanic, which is where my interest in how vehicles work started.
